He is nominated as member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Tobey rejects this nomination. In July he moves to and settles in Basel, Switzerland.

He receives the First Prize at The 1961 International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture at the Carnegie Institute, Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.
Solo exhibition at Galerie Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland. From this point on he works with the gallery on a regular basis.
