Mark Tobey is born in Centerville, Wisconsin, USA on December 11th.
1911
Tobey moves to New York as a fashion illustrator.
1913
He studies at the Art Institute, Chicago.
1917

1918
Tobey enters the Baha'i religious community.
1922
He teaches at the Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle.
1923/24
During this period he makes the most important encounter of his life following his contact with the Baha'i teachings. He becomes friendly with Teng Kuei, a Chinese student at the University of Washington, who teaches him the techniques of East Asian painting (brushwork, calligraphy and compositional methods) and spirituality.
