March 2006

It is our pleasure to announce the following new edition at Mode Records/New York . The audio/video production 'Cage:Music/Art/Chess' in the DVD-version of this John Cage edition documents among other things the friendship between Cage and Tobey and the inspiration which John Cage got from Mark Tobey's ' White Writing'-paintings from the 40ies. Concerning this subject the CMT accompanied this publication advisory. www.moderecords.com/catalog/158cage.html

Arnold Stadler, Dr. phil., poet, novelist and essayist, is one of the most renowned writers in German language of his generation and the real Tobey-aficionado. He followed the artist’s traces traveling west to the USA, visiting Trempealeau and the Mississippi, going farer west to Seattle, and beyond. He saves the painter’s works wherever he can find them. Stadler was awarded (among others) with the Nicolas-Born-Award (1995), the Marie-Luise-Kaschnitz-Award (1998) and the Georg-Büchner-Award (1999). We welcome him with pleasure as our new corresponding member.

He knows very well the European and American exhibition landscape of Mark Tobey and his market, too.
Marco Bernasconi, with his extensive interest in Mark Tobey´s life and work, is somewhat like a scout of informations for the CMT.
Now he becomes our new corresponding member. Mr. Bernasconi is situated in Lugano, Switzerland, as lawyer.

In 1960 Mark Tobey (* 1890 Trempealeau,  + 1976 Basel) moved his main residence and workplace from Seattle to Basle, Switzerland. Tobey, one of the great pioneers of modern American painting, was seventy years old at the time and at the peak of his international fame. From that point on, Tobey found a strong supporter in one of the leading galleries in the world, the Beyeler gallery in Basle. A series of exhibitions followed, all accompanied by catalogs of standard-setting quality. The last Tobey show to date at the Galerie Beyeler, in 1990, celebrated the painter’s one-hundredth birthday; paintings by Mark Rothko were also shown. Both painters, who represented the United States at the 1958 Venice Biennial, knew each other well and appreciated each other’s work. Ernst Beyeler and his wife, Hildy, spent a great deal of time with Tobey during the last phase of his life, of which little is known, owing to his discreet lifestyle. Beyeler kindly agreed to answer a few questions about his personal memories of Tobey and his last years in Basle. Matthias Bärmann conducted the interview.
