February 2010

On 25 February 2010, famous art dealer, collector and museum founder Ernst Beyeler died in Basel /Switzerland at age 88.

In 1958 Beyeler had seen Tobey’s painting  White journey (1956) on the World Expo in Brussels and aquired this painting for his own collection. This was the beginning of a narrow and friendly cooperation. Galerie Beyeler became Tobey’s most important gallery  and in 1960 Ernst Beyeler made Tobey move to Basel where the artist lived and worked until his death.

The 1997/98  Tobey retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid/Spain, curated by Kosme de Baranano and Matthias Bärmann, had been supported by Beyeler with important loans.
In March 2005 our Committee-member Matthias Bärmann made an interview with Ernst Beyeler concentrated on his friendship with Mark Tobey – see

Ernst Beyeler always followed up the activities of the CMT with attention and goodwill. We are mindful of our honorary member.
