Diebenkorn. Philip Guston was also 'west coast' and not embraced until he moved to NY in the 1950s. But perhaps it's finally a matter of sensibility and temperament rather than regional location. As Bärmann suggests, Tobey certainly didn't fit the macho profile favoured by the propaganda machine of the 1950s. But you'd think there would have been plenty of critics and historians ready to correct the record since then, marked by major retrospectives.  More recently I'm surprised that Marden's beautiful calligraphic paintings aren't contextualised with Tobey's work. Perhaps they have been, but I've missed it. Meanwhile, congratulations again on the book, and thanks for getting it to me.

My mother is an expresionist painter and she is very fond of Mark Tobey's works since she saw an exhibition of his paintings in the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. ..."
