At the top of the camphor tree
Rests an old heron:
Spiritualized.
So similar to the loneliness
Of my sighing breath!

The morning-fog on the ricefield
Begins to raise.
All of a sudden
The herons stretch
Their slender necks.

The fleecy clouds turn to red
In the twilight of day’s end –
So i understand:
It’s a call
Of a far-living friend.
